African Wind Energy Association buys the most green electricity to date

The African Wind Energy Association has made the biggest purchase of green electricity to date, with it's purchase to "green" the electricity consumed at the Wind Power Africa 2010 Conference.

The City of Cape Town handed over a Green Electricity Certificate purchase statement in a special ceremony during the conference which ran last week at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

This follows the implementation of a programme whereby the City gives consumers the opportunity to purchase "green electricity" generated at the Darling Wind Farm on the West Coast.

This renewable energy is an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional electricity which is produced from finite fossil fuels and is a major source of pollution.

Mayoral Committee Member for Utility Services, Alderman Clive Justus, presented Hermann Oelsner of the African Wind Energy Association with the statement which confirms that 9900 kWh of Green Electricity Certificates have been purchased. This is the largest purchase of the City’s Green Electricity Certificates so far and will ensure that the electricity used during the conference is "green".
