Still a chance for Table Mountain to be a New 7 Wonder

You have today.

The last day before voting closes for the New 7 Wonders of Nature campaign. And Table Mountain is doing well – it is currently at No.7 in its category, but a few more votes can help boost its position, and its prospects of being in the final seven.

Table Mountain has jumped from 29th place to its current position in the top 11 in its category. It is even ahead of historical mountains like Mount Everest, K2 and Kilimanjaro, though it is currently receiving competition from other sites such as Mount Olympus in Greece and Mount Vesuvius, the legendary volcano. 

To qualify for the next round, Table Mountain needs to be ranked in the top 11 of its category; mountains and volcanoes – which has 36 fellow nominees. Other categories include seascapes, lakes, islands, ice formations, waterfalls and forests.

Many well-known and respected South African figures and celebrities have shown their support for South Africa's favourite mountain by casting their votes. This includes the Archbishop Desmond Tutu, comedian Marc Lottering, radio DJ Natalie Becker and the SA Cricket squad amongst others.

Archbishop Tutu, has remarked that getting Table Mountain in the New 7 Wonders will help South Africa to "...rise to the top and soar like an eagle." In essence, we will be recognisable, powerful and proud of what we have achieved for our mountain, and our country.

The public can vote online at http://www.votefortablemountain.com/ or by calling 0041 77 312 4041 and selecting Table Mountain's three-digit code, which is 332. Calls to the New 7 Wonders Swiss mobile voting number will cost R3.29 a minute in peak times (7am - 7pm) and R2.92 a minute off-peak (7pm - 7am).

Since the top 77 (11 places in each category) will officially close tomorrow, hurry and place your vote. Your vote will also promote its selection to the top 21 (3 from each category); which will be chosen by a panel of experts and announced on the 23rd of July. Thereafter a third and final phase of voting will begin.

Since the New 7 Wonders of Nature are being decided by votes from the public, it seems that the imperative is on you to make others around the world recognise Table Mountain as one of the truly wonderous things about this world.
