Win a copy of Old Nectar

Old Nectar

Award winning gardener, Una van der Spuy, would have turned 100 on 20 July 2012. She sadly died just five days before her 100th Birthday. In remembrance of Una’s green legacy, we are offering 3 giveaway copies (courtesy Jacana Media) of her handsome book, Old Nectar.

Old Nectar, in the Jonkershoek Valley near Stellenbosch, is South Africa’s most famous private garden and its creator and constant gardener, Una van der Spuy, takes us through it in this book, sharing a lifetime of knowledge and experience about gardening and plants.

This year she was a recipient of the South African Green Industries Council (SAGIC) Honours Roll. SAGIC is an umbrella organisation representing the green industry in South Africa. Its primary objectives are to represent the green industry, defend best practice, facilitate issues of national interest pertaining to the green industry, organise and market combined networking opportunities, and promote gardening and the greening of South Africa. Her other awards are an Award of Merit for outstanding services to Conservation in the Cape (Cape Tercentenary Foundation in 1992). Una has also received a medal from the Nurserymen’s Association for Meritorious Service to Horticulture.

Una had distilled a lifetime of knowledge and experience in this volume about her famous garden, which, as well as being a national monument, features regularly in overseas books and magazines. For many years she was  active in the field of conservation and preservation, particularly with regard to old buildings, which were being demolished at an alarming rate.

To win a giveaway copy, send us a photograph of your garden, which should feature indigenous plants, to capetowngm@gmail.com. The first three photos we receive from the Cape Town area, will be selected to receive a copy of Una van der Spuy’s Old Nectar.
