Trains and cycles and tourist make a lot of sense to me. Congradualtions to the farsighted people who initiated this. I love the idea that people can cycle but if they just want to see the world why not combine it with a train trip.
Let's say you want to go to Cape Point from Cape Town. Get on the train to Simon's Town and then get your bike off the train cycle out and back. Lovely. This as a taxi trip will cost you a lot of money.
Thanks for sharing.
Have fun

Try the Spier wine farm. They have a sanctuary / rehabilitation centre and I know for a fact they work with a lot of owls. Good luck, sounds like a super project!

I have come to the conclusion that we all have a little blame global warming and its consequences and guilt even more politicians who do not slow down.

Seeing a well operational recycling system just makes me smile :)
Good news. Metrorail emerges from the middle ages.
However
1. a southern suburbs-to-city one-way ticket costs around R8-R10. And Metrorail wantsTWENTY rand for a bike? one way? That's simply HIGHway robbery.
2. When is offpeak, exactly? The link doesn't specify.
Where can I find a list of areas that require dog walking activity cards?
Hi there,
I need help with acquiring owl pellets. I have a grade 7 practical I would like to do with my students at the high school I work at. I live in cape town and have been finding it hard to find a place with owls. Please help me.

Hi, saw 4 Cape Clawless Otters playing in front of our house in the water (Uitsig Paninsula) at 10.30pm on Friday the 22nd Feb 2013
.
We were lucky enough to be in Cape Town at the end of 2011. Staying the Strand, we drow out to Simon's Town for a day trip. It was a destination I last visited as a child and it was good fun to actually see it again and be able to show all the beautiful sites to my children this time around.
Going for a swim at Boulder Beach after seeing the pengiuns up close in the reserve area, we didn't even imagine running into more of them. It was lovely taking a swim and having these cute little birds all around us.
On this trip I took a few hundred photos as well and got my love for photography back on track BIG TIME.
Hopefully I can do more of the "get back to Cape Town" part as well! The last time around we didn't manage to get to Cape Point and I would love to go through Simon's Town again and then on to Cape Point the next time we are there.
Wow very interesting article. I have been researching the carbon footprint of clothing in the Western Cape over the last four years and have due to the crisis we now face, launched a clothing clothing company in an effort to start raising the awareness of the clothing recycling and landfills. My blog is www.pre-loved.co Hope to connect soon. Best regards Janice
Hi, thanks for this update! Is the paint eco-friendly? Usually paint isn't. I ask because I thought 'green' meant environmentally sustainable.
The photos are great and those penguins are sooo cute! Hope I can visit Cape Town soon :)
Here are the links for more information and explanantions on the various cards;
1. http://www.sanparks.org/about/news/default.php?id=1748
2. http://www.sanparks.org/parks/table_mountain/tourism/access-cards-permits.php
Please contact the TMNP if the above is not sufficient:
For more information on the TMNP My Green Card and Activity Permits , please contact the Tokai Tourist office on:
Please provide a link or document that clearly and expressly explains the various cards, and how it impacts hikers, dog walkers, horse riders, climbers etc. I am led to believe that some of the SAN Parks officers offer verifying accounts of the rules etc and I would like to keep something official on me to resolve any issues arising.
This is a joint law enforcment initiative between multiple agencies. The City's boat will add and bolster the current fleet of law enforcment vessels operating in and around Cape Town's coastline.
Great Idea, except that if the unit has only one boat, it will be come mostly ineffective. At Least 5 to 10 boats or more are needed to patrol that part of the coast effectively
Why should I have to pay to ride on the beach? And plus, I Pay R300 for an activity card and then cannot do anything else with it. I have to get a wild card to? You guys don't care about looking after your areas, its all about making money. You have to get an activity card for each RIDER that rides on the beach, NOT per HORSE. What if 3 people ride the same horse, why should we have to pay R900 in total to ride the same horse on the same beach. You guys are a joke. If you were doing it to protect your beaches and mountains fine.. But you are making money, and as much of it as possible. It makes me sick.
Great Idea, love that Cape Town is stretching itself in green mobility - great article.
Hi - I really appreciate this blog and the variety of information. The train safety concerns me..... I am moving to CT in March 2013 from the USA and I have a job in Wynberg. I am trying to make a decision about where to live, either within walking distance to work or somewhere along the southern suburbs train line. I do not want to be faced with the choice of buying a car. Do you have any suggestions? Can I trust the trains on weekdays to get me to Wynberg if I lived along the southern route? Or should I live in town and commute south to Wynberg? Thanks much.
