South Africa’s political system is not very well structured to allow easy access for citizens to the halls of power, but we all vastly underestimate the power we have as consumers. If a company does anything you’re uncomfortable with, you need to do two things. First, STOP buying from them! Otherwise you’re just becoming part of the problem. The second step is to write to the head of the organisa?on and explain in polite and simple terms what your concern is and that you won’t be buying from them again until you see that the company’s environmental record has improved. And follow up that simple, polite letter once a month until the matter is resolved. We vastly underestimate the immense power that this type of communication has. By remaining polite, rational and non-threatening, it becomes very difficult for a company to dismiss you as an isolated nut. You’ll be amazed at the changes you can achieve.
