The Green Point Park Dome Education Centre reached an exciting milestone with the construction of the new dome shaped educational space at Green Point Park, is the news from the City’s Environmental Management Department.

On Thursday morning, 21 March 2024, on a perfect windless and sunny day, the curved moulded glass dome of 2m wide, 16mm thick and 155kg in weight was installed at the top of the domed structure within eight minutes. This classroom will form part of the City’s Experiential Education Garden (EEG), currently being built on the edge of the park.

To have a vision and an inspirational idea of creating a domelike structure to represent the dwelling of one of our First Nation groups, the Khoi, was one thing. Yet, it had to be visualised and designed by an architect who could think outside the box, someone like Derek Kock from DKA Architects and his team, who created an amazing design. However, to make sure it could be built, the City needed someone with a creative thinking ability, a practical engineering mind and old school skills, like David Marks and his team from MEWA Engineering, to make the Dome a reality.

‘These teams, in partnership with the City, have made good progress thus far in making this dream a reality. If all goes according to plan, the teams should be able to complete the project by the end April 2024. The Dome represents the absolute cutting edge of mass timber engineering and construction internationally.

‘This is the first mass timber dome ever to be built in South African and internationally it is the first Three-dimensional mass timber dome to be built. Mass timber is the newest and greenest system of carbon conscious construction in the world today and the dome has been one of the catalysts for accelerating this construction in South Africa. We are so proud of this project and cannot wait to see the facility in all its splendour once it is complete. It is going to be a magnificent feature of the park. The Khoi education programme and exhibition displays will form part of this domed educational space imitating a Khoi dwelling with exhibitions inside,' said the City's Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews.

‘The Green Point Park, which is managed by the Economic Growth Directorate’s Strategic Assets Department, is one of Cape Town’s most beloved spaces, attracting more than one million visitors a year. This fantastic Three-dimensional mass timber dome is an incredible addition that celebrates Khoi heritage and will complement the interactive, fun, and beautiful elements that park visitors currently enjoy. We encourage the public to look out for this feature when they visit the park and don’t forget to take photographs,’ said Alderman James Vos, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth.

Internationally and in South Africa the dome is a firstGreen Point Park dome education centre

• First mass timber structure to employ the use of Three-dimensional ply, never before has any company succeeded in doing this
• First Three-dimensional mass timber dome ever, to be built. There are 12 mass timber domes worldwide, all of which are Two-dimensional in that they are made up of 12 or more segments of two dimensions and rely on the human brain to make them look dome shaped
• First roof ever to use curved steel plates to form a perfect Three-dimensional roof, making use of geometry that has not been used for more than 60 years.

In SA this is the first mass timber dome ever built. Mass timber is the newest and greenest system of carbon conscious construction. 2-metre-wide 155kg curved moulded glass dome fixed on top of a metal grid circular shaped frame for ventilation inside the dome. 3-dimensional timber glue laminated spiral light of 9,5 metres

'The addition of the Khoi dome structure, exhibition and lesson elements will further enhance the EEG's offering to all visitors,' said Alderman Andrews.
