Join a celebration of culture and heritage at Kuier@TheCastle, Cape Town CBD’s biggest monthly family-friendly creative and lifestyle event on 28 September at the Castle of Good Hope.

In celebration of Heritage and Tourism Month, this is a special edition of Kuier@TheCastle to pay tribute to South Africa’s rich cultural diversity. This edition will highlight the talents of local craft artisans, performers, and designers, showcasing the unique cultural heritage that shapes our creative economy.

Hosted by the Craft + Design Institute (CDI) in collaboration with the Castle of Good Hope, Kuier@TheCastle has become a must-visit event for locals and visitors in Cape Town. This event is ideal for the entire family, combining local artisanal products, interactive creative workshops, delicious local foods, and vibrant live music. Additionally, visitors will enjoy full access to all of the Castle’s museums and exhibitions throughout the day.

“This Heritage Month, we invite everyone to celebrate our nation’s incredible cultural diversity. Come experience the artistry of our local makers, discover the stories behind their work, and support our creative economy,” says Fran Stewart, Market Development Programme Manager at the CDI. She adds that since its launch in February, the monthly market has supported over 170 small and medium enterprises, contributing more than R920,000 in trade value to the local economy.

Kuier@TheCastle Workshops

  • This September edition of Kuier@TheCastle will feature several hands-on workshops, offering an immersive craft and arts experience. Whether you want to learn a new creative skill or simply enjoy a family day out, the workshops are designed to cater to all interests.
  • Keep a look out on Kuier@TheCastle social media for a fantastic line up of workshops which you’ll be able to book through Quicket. Workshops include, beadworks, micro mosaic jewellery, tufting and a host of others to inspire your creativity – no prior skills required.
  • For younger visitors, special creative workshops will be running throughout the day, where children can explore their creativity and take home their own handcrafted pieces.

Pop-Up Boutiques and Fashion Shows

Adding to the Heritage Month festivities, local designer Thabo Makhetha will present two fashion shows between 12pm and 1:30pm, showcasing the latest trends at her LuxLane pop-up boutique and other exciting new designers.

Explore the Castle

All Kuier@TheCastle visitors will have access to the Castle’s museums and exhibitions throughout the day. That includes the IZIKO William Fehr Collection and the Cape Heritage Museum that feature on the Art Craft + Museums Map.

Calvyn Gilfellan, CEO of the Castle Control Board: “Heritage Month is arguably the most significant time here at the Castle. This year’s theme is ‘Celebrating the lives of our heroes and heroines who laid down their lives for our freedom’ and have already witnessed a series of events supporting it such as an Olive Tree planting in memory of all those who died in global conflicts such as the one in Palestine, a Cape-to-China Book Fair, a continuation of the African Queens art exhibition, participation in transformative heritage seminars, Khoi and San revivalist events, and many more.
