Elaine Millin tells us about the Vendor Art Project which is part of The Big Issues' social development programme for vendors. It is designed to give vendors a quiet time to create . All vendors are encouraged to join, no art experience is needed, it's a space to create and explore. The art vendor featured in the current November edition is Batsi Jorofani. who will also be featured in the  Bumper Christmas edition of The Big Issue.

The Bumper Christmas edition will be out on 6 December, says Derek Carelse, and includes a copy of the 2025 Art Craft + Museums Map. There are 10 000 copies of The Bumper Edition and sales are intended to help vendors to raise the money they need to get back to the Eastern Cape and to cover back to school costs for their children. That's the reason for the R50.00 price for this bumper edition.

The theme for the vendor artists for this edition is summer, Christmas, time to relax with family and the featured artwork is again by Batsi Jorofani - but we wont' tell you what he has conjured up. (We've cheated and it's the Christmas Angel above!) He is one of the several other vendor artists, who will be featured in the Bumper Edition AND their work is available for sale. These artworks would make wonderful Christmas gifts! So please be supportive - it's the Christmas time of giving. [See below for the works and if you would like to purchase you can contact Elaine  at E This email address is being protected from spambots. Derek provides us with some information about what to expect in the Bumper Edition. The theme is astonishing stories of 2024. For example mind-blowing discoveries of 2024 such as the Plastic Eating Worm, the Self Eating Orangutans and Mystic Ghost Ships. he also explains that that The Big Issue SA is part of the global Big Issue family who give 50% of each sale of the magazine to the vendor. This is a substantial job creation project. The Little Issue, which is part of  each edition, has a run-on of 160 000 copies to support literacy for kids. These copies are distributed to under resources township primary schools in 5 provinces.

LOTS of good reasons for buying any November issues right now and to look out for The Big Issue #335 - the BUMPER Christmas Edition that will be on the streets from 6 December through to end January 2025. AND what about gifting yourself or a friend with a work by a Vendor Artist!
