Annerie Senekal has been appointed curator of the Stellenbosch University Botanical Garden (SUBG), becoming the first woman to hold the position in the garden's history.

Senekal officially assumed the role on Wednesday, July 1, after serving as acting curator for the past nine months following the death of former curator Dr Donovan Kirkwood in 2025.

Stellenbosch University Botanical Garden,During that time, she oversaw the garden's day-to-day operations while continuing her responsibilities as assistant curator, helping to manage its plant collections and support staff, and ensuring visitors continued to enjoy one of Stellenbosch University's most well-known public spaces.

Reflecting on the transition, Senekal said one of the greatest challenges was navigating the loss of Kirkwood, whom she described as both a respected leader and mentor. "Beyond losing a respected leader, I lost a mentor who played a pivotal role in shaping my passion for plant conservation and understanding of the important role botanical gardens play in conservation and society," she said.

Senekal said her appointment was the culmination of a journey that began as an intern at the garden.

"It is a privilege to join the line of curators who have shaped this historic garden. I have been passionate about the work of SUBG for many years, and I am grateful for the opportunity to help build on that legacy and continue growing its impact," she said.

CONGRATULATION to Annerie Senekal on her appointment to this special treasure in Stellenbosch.
