With the Franschhoek Literary Festival (FLF) just a few days away (15–17 May 2026), audiences can look forward to a weekend of ideas, storytelling and riveting conversations in one of South Africa’s most beautiful literary settings.

Alongside its headline international and local authors, this year’s programme features a number of unique sessions. From family storytelling and wildlife photography to food culture and unforgettable personal memoirs, there are many reasons to head to the winelands to take it all in.

Festival-goers looking to start their weekend with a celebration can join the annual Rock for Reading fundraiser on Friday evening at the Barnyard Theatre at Bridge House School. A long-standing favourite of the festival, this event combines live music, good food and dancing in support of the FLF School Reading Programme, which runs school libraries and year-round literacy initiatives in four under-resourced schools in the Franschhoek Valley.

Franschhoek’s own Uncorked will perform a high-energy set of classic hits from ABBA to Coldplay, making it a memorable festival highlight for music lovers, with tickets even including a light dinner.

Families making their way to Franschhoek on Saturday 16 May can enjoy the festival’s inaugural Children’s Programme, thoughtfully created to inspire curiosity, foster a lifelong love of reading, and create a more inclusive literary experience for younger audiences and their families.

Environmental issues are certainly appropriate for a literary festival in the Cape Winelands!

The Earth Transformed Saturday, 14:30–15:30 Climate, water scarcity, failing rivers, rising demand and how environmental pressures reshape power. Strongest eco-current affairs angle.
Into Wild Waters Saturday, 11:30–12:30 Western Cape tidal pools, wild swimming, nature, renewal and connection to place.
The Secret Life of Bees Saturday, 14:30–15:30 Honey, bees, local landscapes, biodiversity and fragile ecosystems.
Language of Landscape Masterclass Saturday, 14:00–16:00 Nature writing with Don Pinnock and Patricia Schonstein; more literary, but clearly nature-led.
Saltwater Girls Saturday, 16:00–17:00 Ocean, wild swimming, water as healing and belonging.
Birds on the Brink Sunday, 13:00–14:00 Threatened bird species across southern Africa, photography and conservation.
Bush Tales Sunday, 13:00–14:00 Wildlife, bushveld stories, lions, conservation-adjacent; lighter and more storytelling-led.
Sponge Island Sunday, 13:00–14:00 Island ecology, fading sponge trade, fragile ecologies and interdependence.
