A wetland is an area of land whose soil is saturated with moisture either permanently or seasonally. Such areas may also be covered partially or completely by shallow pools of water. Wetlands include swamps, marshes, and bogs. In South Africa many wetlands are known as "vlei's". The water found in wetlands can be saltwater, freshwater, or brackish. 

Wetlands are considered the most biologically diverse of all ecosystems and should be preserved from environmental danger. 

Wetlands not only contain vast amounts of life and biodiversity, they perform many important functions. They provide flood control, provide a habitat for fish, wildlife, and plant species, maintain water quality and regulate the water table. They also provide a beautiful space in which to fish, view wildlife, and educate ourselves about environmental issues.

Wetlands listed may be natural, reconstructed or artificial and may even be on an official protection list.
