The Big Issue is a Cape Town-based non-profit organisation that was started in 1997 to support homeless, marginalised and unemployed locals to earn a living.
The Big Issue publishes a general interest monthly magazine sold by unemployed, homeless and socially excluded vendors. This is backed up by a social development programme of vendor support, vocational, life and business skills training and guidance counselling, which aids them to move back into mainstream society.
Our core business model is that all profits from sales of the magazine and advertising be used to produce a better magazine and to provide jobs and social support for poor and homeless people.
