The Raapenberg Bird Sanctuary is a section of the Liesbeek River, located between the Hartleyvale football ground and the South African Astronomical Observatory. The sanctuary features grassy picnic sites and shady trees.
The area includes many bird species such as the sacred ibis and Egyptian goose. Plenty of herons, coots, ducks and smaller birds hide in the reeds across the river. Raapenberg is also recognised as an important breeding site for many duck species.
