The Manyanani Peace Park was founded in Khayelitsha in 1995, on the anniversary of the first democratic elections of South Africa. This is the first community park to be successfully established and maintained in the informal settlements of Cape Town.
Manyanani Peace Park covers of 1.8 hectares of land and includes the following facilities:
- A fully established community food garden
- Open air amphitheatre for cultural & community events
- Formal pathways, drinking fountains & benches
- Indigenous Cape Floral lawns, trees & groundcovers
- Playground with a variety of equipment
- A hand-painted wall mural
- A half-size practice soccer field, home base for the Citi-Hilights soccer club
- A full-size open air basketball court, home base for the Slik-Nikes basketball club
- A small community centre with hall, toilets & store-room
Women’s job creation projects are hosted at the community centre.
A fully guided tour of the park with a presentation of the plans for the future can be arranged with one week’s notice.
