Oasis began as Oasis Special School in 1952, providing education for learners with intellectual disability who were excluded from mainstream schooling. As the children grew older, there was the challenge of where they would be able to work, with many failed attempts to place them into the formal job market. In response, we opened the Oasis Protective Workshop, a supportive environment where the children could transition from school into a job.
Over the years, other projects and services for people with Intellectual disability have been added, and today Oasis is one of the largest and most impactful organisations of its kind, not just in the Western Cape but nationally. The aim of our recycling project is to create sustainable employment for people with intellectual disability, and to generate income to subsidize the various support offerings we provide.
For more than two decades, Oasis Recycling has
- created jobs for 1000’s of young people and adults with intellectual disability
- provided professional recycling solutions to hundreds of businesses in the Cape Metro
- provided a bustling drop-off centre in Claremont which offers a domestic recycling service.
Oasis processes over 160 tons of recyclable waste a month. This means that we save the City of Cape Town approximately 16 000 cubic meters of landfill every month, making us a significant contributor towards recycling in the Cape Metropole.
