Robben Island is an iconic South African island in Table Bay, off coast of Bloubergstrand. The island is known for being the home of numerous political prisoners, and is most notably the place where former South African president Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 of his 27 years. Today, it is a museum and heritage site.
The Robben Island museum acts as a focal point of South African heritage, and runs educational programmes for school groups, youths and adults. The museum also facilitates tourism development, and conducts ongoing research related to the island.
