The newly expanded picnic area at the Rondevlei section of the False Bay Nature Reserve was unveiled on Friday, 1 December 2023, by the City’s Biodiversity Management team together with the City’s Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews.
The False Bay Nature Reserve consists of six parts namely, Rondevlei, Zeekoevlei, Strandfontein Birding, Pelican Park, Slangetjiebos and the Zandwolf coastal section.
Rondevlei was established in 1952 as a bird sanctuary. The old plant nursery at the Rondevlei section has now been transformed into an additional picnicking space. This expansion will provide extra space for families and children to play while being surrounded by the famous hippos of Rondevlei.
‘With the additional picnic space visitors to Rondevlei can enjoy the outdoors even more. Cape Town has exquisite natural resources and the City is doing all it can to make these areas as accessible as possible, and to enhance visitors’ experience to our reserves and protected areas. Our community needs to know what we have created here and I am encouraging those who do not yet know what we have to offer here at the False Bay Nature Reserve to come take a look during the festive season,’ said Alderman Eddie Andrews.
The Friends of Zeekoevlei and Rondevlei, donors, stakeholders and City staff gathered during this unveiling of the expanded picnic area at Rondevlei which is now 15 x 25 metres in size.
‘We needed the extra space. People had been asking if the nature reserve has anything for children and now we can proudly say that we have a play area that includes a jungle gym. We did this by simply repurposing the old nursery area. We invite everyone to come and visit the site and enjoy what we have here,’ said Alderman Andrews.
- The Rondevlei section of the False Bay Nature Reserve will close at 13:00 on 24 and 31 December 2023; and will be closed all day on 25 December 2023.
