While the Corona pandemic is sweeping across the world, Abalimi’s response is to relaunch its manure runs, taking resources to micro-farmers across the townships. Their target is to raise R150 000, which will be used to reach approximately 1500 farmers over a period of six weeks.
Abalimi is certain that this will strengthen food security among the unemployed in these difficult times.

Personal message from Grace Stead
In the late 1980's Abalimi carried out a very successfull manure run programme, which took manure, seeds and seedlings, as well as free advise and information, out into the far flung reaches of the townships in and around Khayelitsha, Nyanga, Gugulethu, Cross-Roads, Philippi and Delft.
Essentially a manure run is a bakkie load full of manure, seeds and seedlings (travelling mini-nursery) together with a field worker / trainer who is able to give advice and information on-site at people's gardens. Resources are sold at nominal cost.
By reinstituting our manure runs we will be providing an essential service to our thousands strong movement of micro-farmers (home and community gardens) who rely on their gardens for food security.
These gardeners would otherwise have to take public transport to our garden centres at the risk of catching the Corona virus. The possibility of infecting people via manure runs is minimal, as each delivery will be done on an individual no-contact basis with social distancing in place.
Each manure run costs R5000 and reaches around 50 gardeners per day (R100 per gardener). These costs are incurred due to transport and labour, and due to COVID-19 additional Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be required, such as masks and sanitizer. Distribution of these resources will vitally assist with our ongoing food security programme.
Your donation, larger or small, will help relaunch these manure runs and have a significant effect on keeping our micro-farming movement alive during these trying times.
