Reopening of Kirstenbosch Gardens for outdoor exercise

Nature lovers can enjoy the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens once again when the gates reopen from Monday 3 August.

Kirstenbosch is one of several botanical gardens that will welcome visitors again from next week.

Western Cape residents will also be allowed to visit the Harold Porter Botanical Gardens in Bettys Bay and the Karoo Desert National Botanical Garden in Worcester. The Hantam National Botanical Gardens in Nieuwoudtville, in the Northern Cape has also reopened.

Cherise Viljoen, a senior horticulturist at Kirstenbosch, says standard operating hours and entrance fees apply.

  • Visitors will be expected to wear masks at all times and observe physical distancing rules.

While large gatherings of groups will be discouraged, Viljoen says there are no visitor quotas at this stage.

Mayor Dan Plato welcomes the reopening.  "As the Mayor of Cape Town, I am pleased to see that one of the key sites showcasing the biodiversity and beauty of our region, will once again be open to the public for exercise."

‘Kirstenbosch Gardens is one of the most well-known spaces for biodiversity and tourism in Cape Town and South Africa. We are pleased that this important park will be used once again for the enjoyment and wellness of our residents, while adhering to strict COVID-19 protocols. Parks by their nature encourage social distancing and now in addition to city parks, Kirstenbosch Gardens will greatly assist in enabling daily exercise to increase mental and physical well-being during this challenging time. I am sure the Kirstenbosch management team are also excited to be opening their doors to the public once again,"  said Mayor Plato.

Earlier this month, the city was able to open its own parks for physical exercise, under the amended regulations announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
