Update on Cape Town drop-off facilities

Updated

The City of Cape Town encourages residents to drop off their waste items, such as clean recyclables and garden refuse, at our open drop off-facilities.

Residents need to please familiarise themselves with the updates about which facilities are open as well as services related to garden greens and chipping.

The City of Cape Town thanks residents who use our drop-off facilities, a number of which re-opened at the start of Level 3 lockdown, and for adhering to the COVID-19 protocols.

Residents are advised of the following updates:

Greens chipping services:

The new greens chipping contract is in the process of being finalised. The public will be informed when this service resumes at the City’s facilities.

In the interim, the garden refuse at the drop-off facilities will be contained in skips and no chipping will be taking place.

Since Wednesday, 8 July 2020, loaders have been on site to compress the stock-piled greens in order to make space for the incoming volumes.

Garden greens service at Wynberg Drop-Off Facility only open to residents:

Disposal of clean garden waste at this facility is currently closed for landscaping/gardening companies. Only residents are currently permitted to bring garden refuse, excluding tree trunks and branches, to the Wynberg drop-off facility, due to the limited space available.

The garden refuse section of the drop-off is currently being upgraded to significantly improve operations on site and increase capacity. Construction is scheduled for completion in 12 months’ time. We ask that residents please bear with us while this process is under way.

Garden services and businesses are requested to make use of the alternative drop-off facilities in the interim:

• Spine Road, Mitchells Plain
• Bellville Transfer Station, Sacks Circle,
• Swartklip Transfer Station, Swartklip Road
• Coastal Park Landfill Facility, Baden Powell Drive
• Vissershok Landfill Facility, N7

Please note that there will be no cost for dropping off at the transfer stations and landfill facilities, provided that the loads are within the 1,5 ton carrying capacity restriction (and are not contaminated). If loads exceed the 1,5 ton capacity, users will be required to purchase disposal coupons at our cash offices before being allowed to use the landfill.

All other drop-off activities at Wynberg Drop-off are operating as normal.

Please note clean garden waste should include only grass cuttings, leaves and branches, and biodegradable material from residential and business properties. No products of animal origin will be accepted.

Update on drop-off facilities that will be reopening:

The Killarney Drop-off is the latest drop-off facility that has reopened to the public.

In addition, the construction and upgrades at Retreat, Woodstock and Hout Bay drop-offs have been completed. It is anticipated that these sites will be operational by 1 August 2020. This will assist with the overflow of garden refuse from the Wynberg drop-off facility. The public will be informed when these drop-off facilities will be open to the public.

This is the current list of drop-off facilities that are operational, and what is accepted:

Important to note:
• Athlone Refuse Transfer Station General Drop-off facility is closed for use by residents.

The City has taken a decision to limit the number of drop-offs reopened in order to have backup capacity in the event of a facility needing to be temporarily closed for decontamination. They are also being used as satellite depots for refuse collections vehicles to minimise contact among teams who would normally report to a central depot.
To reduce the spread of the virus, we will apply a strict ‘no mask, no entry rule’ at all City facilities. All visitors to our disposal facilities will be subjected to screening.

A special concession has been made to allow for disposal of garden waste at the De Grendel, Kensington and Atlantis drop-offs (under normal circumstances, garden materials would not be allowed). However, this is subject to sufficient capacity being available at these sites.
